International Rare Disease Day

28.2.2025 News

Today is the Rare Disease Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the many rare disease types that, while individually uncommon, collectively impact a significant number of patients worldwide. Among these are several rare cancers like soft tissue sarcomas including leiomyosarcoma, liposarcoma, and of course gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), each presenting unique challenges in diagnosis and treatment.

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare type of cancer that arises from smooth muscle tissue, often found in the uterus, stomach, intestines, or blood vessels. Liposarcoma originates in fat cells and can occur in any part of the body, but most commonly in the limbs or abdomen. GIST is the most common soft tissue sarcoma, and it occurs in the digestive tract, most often in the stomach or small intestine.

Despite their rarity, these diseases collectively affect a substantial number of individuals. Early diagnosis is crucial for improving therapy responses and outcomes. However, the rarity of these diseases often leads to delays in diagnosis and limited treatment options. This highlights the urgent need for continued research and the development of new therapies.

On Rare Disease Day, we stand with patients, families, and healthcare providers in the fight against these challenging diseases. We all must drive progress towards better diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately, a cure.
